History I launched this site on April 18, 2006—the 94th
anniversary of the day Carpathia
arrived in New York with 705 Titanic
survivors (a scant third of the 2227 souls who set sail from
Queenstown). The Titanic tragedy represents a turning point in modern maritime
safety. An inquiry board recognized that hundreds of lives
could have been spared if Titanic’s
designers and owners had paid more attention to safety issues such as
watertightness, escape paths, lifesaving appliances, and emergency
procedures. The first International Convention of Safety of Life at
Sea, or SOLAS, took place two years after Titanic
sank. A multitude of national and
private codes have arisen since that time, but SOLAS rulebooks remain
frequently cited by most maritime authorities. |
